A Woman of Bangkok is a well written novel set in 1950s Thailand Unfortunately, being well written doesn t mean that it s a good story It has some historical and cultural interest because of its age and setting, but little else to recommend it The main character, Reg, is sent to Thailand by his company where he becomes besotted by a prostitute She treats him like dirt and cons him out of his money while giving nothing in return apart from the obvious Reg is probably the most irritating, pathetic and feeble character that I ve ever encountered His history shows that he is both brave and reasonably intelligent, but despite moments of realisation he continues to pander to a horrible, whining, greedy prostitute An unsatifying and ridiculous tale. I found the book hard going and seriously considered giving up I was mildly offended by the misogyny and portrayals of both Wretch and the White Leopard I wanted to give Reg a good shake And although it was subtle, I was impressed by the subjective perspectives of the Leopards houseAnyway, I m glad I persevered And glad still that I read the epilogue about Jack Reynolds Knowing a little of the man explained a lot about the bookIn terms of the theme, Private Dancer is probably a better read. Found it a bit hard to get into but quite fascinating and harrowing once u get into it The poor hero is an ex motor racing champ turned salesman with emotional and attachment issues Becomes live Addicted to a thai prostitute with disastrous but ultimately enlightening results. Written in the 50 s, it has the feel of something turn of the century In the style of that time, it has less plot than we are now used to, but insight into the characters Interesting, but not something that makes me want to tear through all the rest of his writing. Bordering on the stereotype of Bangkok sex workers, the novel simplifies the female protagonist to the extent that she s become a flat character I d recommend readers to peruse David Young s Thailand Joy for a nuanced portrayal On the other hand, Reggie s characterization is brilliantly crafted, especially in terms of his psychological dilemma. 3.8 I found this book compelling even though there were times when the plot seemed to drag and the conversations repetitive The focus of the book lies in the way Reynolds reveals the psychology of his characters, Reg s obsessive passion, Vilai s obsession for money whatever it might take to procure it the plot in itself is very simple Great descriptions of Thailand, both of Bangkok and rural areas The reader can still feel and smell the Thailand of today despite the fact it was written 50 years ago.
