I bought this immediately after reading The Year of the Storm. It includes a teaser chapter for the book, but I recommend reading the book first. I don't think you can appreciate the role these characters play in the back story if you read this novella first.

While I liked this, I didn't like it as much as the book, primarily because I find reading about religious zealots and "Godbased" cults both boring and upsetting. This quote pretty much sums it up:

"To say she needed God to fill that void might be oversimplifying. She needed something to fill it, something big, something larger and greater and more mysterious than her. Because if there was nothing greater to the world than the laws of science and the greed of man, she didn’t much see the point of it all. Yet she’d risked everything to chase that mystery, to find the point to her life, and here she was paying with that very life, less sure about any divine being than she’d ever been before."

I also found the major plot points less believable, more contrived and rushed, but that's not unusual with a novella.

So, if you like the book, this is worth reading, but if you aren't interested in the book, then don't bother reading this either.

Even if you haven't read that amazing novel, please do read this one! I am an extremely slow reader, but I couldn't put this one down. Can't wait for Year of the Storm!
This prequel to "The Year of the Storm" is a chilling glimpse into the creation of Sykes character through the mindless following of a religious cult. If heaven is impossible to achieve and hell is too frightening to imagine, where do people go when they disappear? Mantooth gives us an option. BROKEN BRANCH is a wonderful companion to THE YEAR OF THE STORM. Like an appetizer before the main course, Mantooth treats the reader to a little taste of the magic one finds in THE YEAR OF THE STORM. I won't spoil the details as I think the story is best discovered on its own, but it is well worth your time.

It was interesting to read BROKEN BRANCH after having read THE YEAR OF THE STORM. I look forward to going back to them again in the future and reading them in order.

Great prose, layered characters and well paced. Highly recommended. John Mantooth is so good that it hurts to finish anything of his knowing first, that I don't have more to read, and second, that I'm nowhere near as good a writer as he is. Broken Branch is wonderful and heartbreaking and all of the superlatives that I could think of to describe what I love best in southern gothic.
